The Parish Church of St Andrew the Apostle, Holt, Norfolk

Proposed Development

Building for the Future

Dear Friends,

St Andrew's is a beautiful and well-proportioned church that stands in the middle of a growing and developing community. It is lovingly cared for, well supported and is open every day for private prayer and public worship as well as to welcome any visitors.

However, ours is essentially a "village" church; we do not have the facilities to meet the needs of a growing congregation and to serve an ever-increasing town population. Therefore the Parochial Church Council has committed itself to an ambitious plan to meet the needs of the 21st Century. Here is the detail of our vision for the future development of the Church. The total cost is likely to be around £480,000, and while we are in the very good position of already having £370,000 we need to be able to raise about £100,000. I have no doubts that with your help this is achievable. I would like to invite you to share our vision. It is an ideal opportunity to give to a good cause in memory of a loved one, or in thanksgiving for a life that has been blessed by God. In recognition of your generosity those who give will have their names recorded in a Book of Gifts. The very stones tell the story of the Parish Church and countless generations have written different chapters. By giving what you can please help us to write another chapter in that story as we seek to love and serve both God and our neighbour.

Every blessing,

Fr. Howard Stoker

Rector of Holt with High Kelling

St. Andrew's Church - the need for expanded facilities:

Shortcomings in the current provision have been evident for a number of years:

  • No permanent office for the Parish Administrator.
  • No facilities for the choir.
  • No meeting room for PCC and other committees.
  • No place for Sunday School during services.
  • no dedicated vestry/sacristy (currently serves many purposes).
  • No public or disabled toilets.
  • No facilities for light refreshments within the church.
  • Chronic shortage of storage space.

Community Use:

The provision of the new facilities opens up opportunities for far greater access to the community. With its excellent acoustics, the church will be able to take its place as a fine venue for concerts, public meetings, talks and lectures, exhibitions and festivals. The meeting room will be available for smaller groups. The garden terrace, accessed from the meeting room, offers a delightful alternative venue for gatherings during the summer months.

What the new estension will provide:

  • Main West Entrance & Lobby providing an entry and reception point for visitors, a gathering space for clergy and choir prior to processing into church and an area supporting special events in church.
  • Clergy Vestry/ Sacristy.
  • A Parish Office giving permanent work base for the Administrator.
  • A Multi-Purpose Meeting Room to be used as a creche, for the Sunday School during services, choir robing and practices, meetings and special events. Ther will also be storage facilities.
  • A Servery to provide drinks and light refreshments.
  • Utility/Boiler Room which will include storage for cleaning materials and flower arranging accessories.
  • W.C.s - Two cubicles, one modified for the disabled, and baby changing facilities.
  • Garden/Terrace - a place of peace and tranquility.
